Adult Baseball vs. Softball: Why Real Hardball Is Worth the Jump
For a lot of guys, slow-pitch softball scratches part of the itch — but if you grew up playing baseball, you feel the difference the moment you step in the box. Adult baseball means live pitching, wood bats, nine innings, and real defense. It’s the game you actually miss. Here’s an honest look at how hardball and softball compare, and where you can get back to the real thing in Northwest Montana.
The real differences
Both are worth playing, and plenty of guys do both. But make no mistake — they’re different games. Here’s how adult baseball stacks up against slow-pitch softball:

The biggest one is the pitching. Standing in against a live arm — working a count, timing a fastball, laying off a bad pitch — is the part no softball league can replicate. Add a wood bat and nine full innings played by real baseball rules, and it’s a completely different test.
But am I too old — or too rusty — for hardball?
Almost certainly not. The Flathead Adult Men’s Baseball League is open to anyone 18 and up, and our rosters run all the way into players’ 70s. Some guys played in college; others hadn’t picked up a glove in twenty years. You don’t need to be in mid-season form — you just need to want to play. Individual players are placed on teams through a tryout and draft.
What you need to make the jump
To try it out, all you really need is a glove — teammates can usually lend a bat or helmet for your first game. Once you’re playing regularly, you’ll want your own kit: a glove, cleats, baseball pants, a batting helmet, and a wood bat. Where to play adult baseball in Northwest Montana
Organized adult hardball is rare in Montana — the nearest leagues are in Spokane and Bozeman — which makes FAMBL the only adult men’s baseball league in the northwest corner of the state. We play wood-bat, nine-inning games with two umpires at Memorial Field in Whitefish, drawing players from Kalispell, Columbia Falls, Whitefish, Missoula, and across the Flathead Valley. As an MSBL/MABL-affiliated league, fully rostered members can also play in national and regional tournaments each year.
